Since the financial crisis, we have been experiencing an unprecedented real estate boom in the world’s major cities, with land and home prices rising steadily. This has a corresponding downside: rising rents. Income growth is no longer keeping pace with this trend. Low- and middle-income residents face the threat of being displaced from sought-after downtown locations. “SOLD CITY” does more than just highlight the dangers to urban culture. It reveals a new social issue and an immense threat to democracy.
